NEW FOREST DISTRICT HISTORY NETWORK

INTRODUCTION

This is an informal organisation to link all those involved in researching the history and archaeology of the New Forest area as well as those that wish to commence such studies. It is not intended to compete with any local history groups in the area but to give them, and others, a forum for the exchange of views and information.

The area covered is roughly that of the Large Bounds of the New Forest i.e. it includes all those areas in which there are properties with actual or potential common rights within the Perambulation of the New Forest. This extends west from Southampton water to just over the Dorsetshire boundary, and from the sea northwards almost as far as Salisbury and Romsey. Such an area did not exist in isolation and was obviously interrelated with the IOW, Poole, Salisbury, Winchester, Southampton et sim.

The aim is to promote serious study of any aspect of the history and archaeology of this area and to publish the results, information, queries etc via its Website. It will offer training and assistance to anyone sharing this aim. Whilst family history can provide a valuable base for research, genealogical investigations are outside its remit and are well covered by existing organisations. The main forum will be via the Internet but it is hoped that it can be based at the New Forest Museum at Lyndhurst. An email discussion list will be started, it is hped . Non Internet members are welcome but it is a great deal easier (and cheaper) to maintain such a network electronically.
